Man and a Van Chelsea Health and Safety Policy
Man and a Van Chelsea is committed to providing a safe, healthy and secure working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with moving, loading, transporting and delivering items as part of our removal services.
Policy Objectives
Our main health and safety objectives are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property; to continually improve our safety performance; and to ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into all aspects of our work, from booking and planning through to completion of each moving job.
Legal Compliance and Responsibilities
Man and a Van Chelsea will comply with all applicable health and safety legislation, regulations and approved codes of practice relevant to our operations. We recognise our responsibility to implement and maintain safe systems of work and to provide the resources needed to manage health and safety effectively.
Management is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, communicated, monitored and reviewed. All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety, as well as that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions, and to cooperate fully with us in meeting our health and safety obligations.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We assess the risks associated with our removal and transport services, including lifting and carrying items, loading and unloading vehicles, driving, access to premises, and working in and around clients homes and businesses. We use these assessments to develop and apply safe working procedures that minimise the likelihood of accidents and incidents.
Where necessary, site-specific assessments will be carried out to identify any particular hazards, such as restricted access, stairs, uneven surfaces, heavy or awkward loads, and parking or loading constraints. These findings inform the way we plan and carry out each job.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of removal work, and we place strong emphasis on correct techniques and the use of appropriate equipment. Staff receive instruction in safe lifting, team carrying and the use of handling aids such as trolleys, dollies, straps and blankets to prevent injuries and protect customer property.
Where feasible, we use mechanical or wheeled aids to reduce the physical strain on our team. We avoid excessive loads, encourage team lifting for bulky items, and adapt our approach to the conditions at each property to ensure safe and efficient handling.
Vehicle Safety and Safe Driving
All vehicles used by Man and a Van Chelsea must be roadworthy, regularly inspected and appropriately maintained. Drivers are required to carry out basic daily checks and to report any defects or concerns immediately so that necessary action can be taken without delay.
Our drivers must follow safe driving practices, obey the Highway Code, and ensure that loads are properly secured, evenly distributed and within the vehicle capacity. We seek to plan routes and schedules realistically to avoid unsafe driving behaviour such as speeding or excessive working hours.
Training, Information and Supervision
We provide our team with appropriate information, instruction and training to carry out their duties safely. This includes induction training, job-specific guidance on manual handling, safe loading, use of equipment, personal protective equipment and customer interaction in domestic and commercial environments.
Supervision is provided to ensure that safety procedures are followed and that any additional training needs are identified. We encourage staff to raise any health and safety concerns, and we treat such reports seriously and constructively.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, Man and a Van Chelsea provides suitable personal protective equipment, such as gloves, high visibility clothing and safety footwear, as appropriate to the task and environment. Staff are required to use this equipment correctly and to look after it. Any damage or defects must be reported so replacements can be provided promptly.
Customer and Public Safety
During moving operations, we take steps to protect customers and members of the public. This includes maintaining clear walkways, managing trip hazards such as trailing straps or wrapping, and controlling access to loading areas when vehicles are being filled or emptied.
We aim to work considerately in and around customer premises, keeping noise and disruption to a minimum and ensuring that our activities do not create unnecessary risks. We provide information to customers when their cooperation is needed to maintain a safe environment, for example by keeping children and pets away from active loading areas.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations that occur in connection with our services must be reported to management without delay. We investigate incidents to understand their root causes and to identify measures that will prevent recurrence, such as changes in procedure, additional training or improvements to equipment.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We recognise the physical demands of removal work and the importance of good health and fitness for our team. Staff are expected to report any health conditions that may affect their ability to work safely, particularly conditions that impact lifting, mobility or driving.
We promote sensible working practices, including appropriate rest breaks, hydration and the avoidance of substance misuse. Working under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Man and a Van Chelsea is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. We regularly review this policy, our risk assessments and procedures in the light of operational changes, incident findings and developments in best practice. Updates to this policy will be communicated to all relevant personnel and, where appropriate, to customers and contractors.
This Health and Safety Policy applies to all activities carried out by Man and a Van Chelsea and forms an integral part of our overall commitment to delivering professional, reliable and safe removal services.
